Matsuyama to start fifth as Buasri bags career-best qualifying

24 Jul 2021

The Thai rider will fire from 12th, one spot behind teammate Mario Aji

It’s been a strong start to the fifth round of the FIM Junior Moto3™ World Championship for the Junior Talent Team with three riders all qualifying inside the top 12 at MotorLand Aragon. Takuma Matsuyama is on the front two rows of the grid for the fourth time in 2021, whilst Mario Aji and Tatchakorn Buasri will both start from the fourth row.

Matsuyama has looked strong all weekend, finishing Friday’s Free Practice sessions in second and fourth respectively. The Asia Talent Team man carried that form into Saturday, ending up fifth on the combined timesheets meaning the Japanese rider will fire away from the middle of the second row of the grid for Sunday’s 15-lap encounter at 13:00 local time (GMT+2).

Indonesia’s Mario Aji was up against it following a frustrating first qualifying session on Saturday morning. The Astra Honda Racing Team rider was languishing down in 20th, needing a big improvement in the afternoon to drag himself into contention. Fortunately, Super Mario found over half a second to jump up to eleventh on the grid for tomorrow.

Joining him on the fourth row of the grid will be Thailand’s Tatchakorn Buasri. The Honda Racing Thailand man put in the best Junior Moto3™ World Championship qualifying performance of his young career to take twelfth overall thanks to a brilliant lap in the morning session.

British Talent Team’s Eddie O’Shea continues his adaptation to the series during his rookie campaign, qualifying 30th for Sunday’s race on his first visit to the MotorLand Aragon circuit.

Matsuyama will be hoping to return to the podium for the first time since Valencia tomorrow, whilst both Aji and Buasri will have their sights firmly set on a debut rostrum.
